PHIL Neville has been told he is an Evertonian now and that his Manchester United career is behind him.

Neville, 32, has three FA Cup winners’ medals from his time at Old Trafford, but Everton’s chairman and owner Bill Kenwright believes the former England international now has a new home.

Kenwright said: ‘‘The Neville family are extraordinary people, the two sons playing for England, their sister playing for England (at netball). They are amazing.

‘‘Phil has brought that winning mentality with him from Old Trafford. When he signed his contract extension here, he said he wanted to finish his career at Everton so that ‘Evertonians will know I am an Evertonian like them now’.

‘‘It was on his mind that when you come from Manchester United, and you are the less famous brother, it is not easy.

‘‘He did not have the easiest of starts to life here, but he had something to prove.

‘‘He is a great captain, a great man and he rallies the troops.

‘‘If I was picking the team he would be first on the team sheet every week.

‘‘I don’t really know whether he has ceased to be Man U – it was such a part of his life.

“He probably doesn’t know either, but he is certainly an Evertonian in our eyes now.

‘‘I watched him at Wembley when Phil Jagielka’s penalty went in and we were through and we had beaten his old club.

‘‘Everybody just raced towards Jags, but Phil contained himself because it was against his old club.

‘‘I believe he was just bursting to make that run across the pitch too but he had that respect. That is the mark of a great captain and a great man.

‘‘He will never downgrade anyone, not another club and not one which had been so much part of his life.”
