GOALKEEPER Darren Ward has announced his retirement following his release from Sunderland on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old last played for the Black Cats in December 2007 in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa and retires after making a total of 582 career appearances.

His opportunities for first-team football were limited at the Stadium of Light, Ward insists that he still had the desire to play football but his body was telling him it was time to call it a day.

However, the former Wales international's thoughts have turned to a possible career in coaching.

"I still have a great appetite for football, but unfortunately my body hasn't, so it's a no-brainer for me to retire from playing," he told the club's official website.

"I know that if I continue with my playing career, I could do myself long-term damage so sadly it's time to stop.

"But I am keen to pass on my experience and am looking to get into coaching."
