Gordon Strachan is thought to be among those being considered for the Sunderland vacancy after announcing he is leaving Celtic.
Strachan began his four-year tenure with three consecutive Scottish league successes but his side let slip a seven-point lead established by the end of 2008.
The 52-year-old former Southampton boss has stepped down after Rangers secured the title this season.
He was quickly installed as bookies favourite to succeed Ricky Sbragia as Sunderland boss.
