HARTLEPOOL United have made a tentative enquiry about taking Chris Westwood back to Victoria Park.
The central defender can leave Peterborough United, after the club was promoted to the Championship.
Westwood spent six full seasons at Pools from 1999 before leaving for Walsall and he joined Posh two years ago.
He still has a year remaining on his deal, but was this week told he can leave for a nominal fee and Posh director of football Barry Fry confirmed Pools have asked about his availability.
“I have to make tough decisions and letting Chris go was a hard one,’’ admitted Posh boss Darren Ferguson.
“He has been a brilliant player for us and one of my best signings.
“Chris needs and wants regular first team football and I can’t guarantee that. I have no doubts at all that there will be plenty of clubs after him now he’s available.’’ Boss Chris Turner is also ready to complete a move for Stockport’s attacking midfielder Leon McSweeney. He scored against Pools in Country’s 2-0 win this season.
Westwood almost rejoined Pools in 2007 during his stint at Walsall, but the proposed deal collapsed at the last minute and the player would welcome the chance to return to the club and add to his 293 appearances.
He could be reunited with former teammate Dimi Konstantopoulos, but acquiring the services of the goalkeeper on a season-long loan from Coventry is proving harder than anticipated for Turner.
“I know the fans would like to see him back but it is not as simple as us asking him back and him coming,’’ he admitted.
“I know Dimi would like to come back but there are financial implications with his current club that make it tougher than just bringing him back.”
Striker Michael Mackay yesterday signed a new deal to keep him at Victoria Park.
