COUNTY Durham's Amanda Whitaker finished third at Silverstone after a race-long battle with HSCC Formula Ford title rival Westie Mitchell.

She qualified second on the grid, alongside Callum MacLeod despite losing time in the pits due to a misfire.

Whitaker made a good start to take the lead off the line, but MacLeod was soon back past on the straight approaching Abbey hairpin.

MacLeod then made a getaway as Whitaker had to defend her position from Mitchell.

The pair joined in battle and were often two abreast through the corners. The positions were changed a number of times, although Mitchell held on to the chequered flag.

"It was a tough, but fair fight" said Whitaker. "We gave each other just enough room!

"I think I was a little down on power, and I'm struggling to slow the car down - we still need to work on the rear brake problem. We'll hopefully have it sorted soon and I can get my head down and win again".

The next round of the HSCC Formula Ford Championship is in three weeks at Snetterton in Norfolk.

However, Whitaker will be racing at Oulton Park in Classic Formula Ford on May 23.
