ALL eyes this week will be on York when they open their doors for the first time since last July, with the traditional three-day Dante Festival, with seven races on each day, starting at 1.40 pm.

It’s the first time racing will take place on the famous Knavesmire since the successful completion of a £2.5 million drainage and irrigation scheme.

With a record investment in prize money of almost £850,000 this prestigious meeting provides a starstudded start to York’s 17-day campaign this year, and is set to attract several Classic and Royal Ascot hopefuls.

On Thursday, Crowded House, the long-time antepost favourite for the Derby is expected to line-up for the totesport Dante Stakes.

Crowded House is trained by Brian Meehan who was so close to Classic glory last weekend with Delegator and Super Sleuth in the Guineas, reports the colt is in top form ahead of Britain’s richest, highest-rated and often, most informative Derby trial.

Wednesday, the opening day, features a pair of Group races: The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes and The Duke Of York Stakes. Topclass three-year-old fillies contest the Group 3 Musidora Stakes; a leading trial for the Oaks next month.

Last year’s winner, the Irishtrained Lush Lashes, went on to win three Group 1 races, including The Darley Yorkshire Oaks. This year, Enticement, owned by the Queen, looks to hold solid claims. Winner of both starts last season, Enticement has been shining on the gallops according to trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

The £100,000 Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes over six furlongs should attract a host of top sprinters. Last year a tight finish saw Assertive, from the yard of Richard Hannon hold off War Artist, with the pair continuing to meet in top sprints over the remainder of the season.

Hitchens is an interesting runner for the in-form stable of David Barron. He made a very pleasing start for his new yard when romping home at Thirsk recently and although this represents a big step up in class, the four-year-old might just be up for the task under jockey Phil Makin.

Today there is a seven race card at Redcar, first race due of at 2.20pm.

The Fillies’ Handicap at 3.50 has only attracted four runners but all are in with a chance.

Strawberry Moon has not been seen since winning over course and distance last October, but Bryan Smart has his team in good order at the moment and a chance is taken with her.
