LADY Lube Rye booked her place in the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley in four weeks’ time with a narrow victory at Redcar yesterday.
Connections have targeted the Listed contest at the East Yorkshire track on May 27 for some time, but kept their plan under wraps until she had shown she was a winner.
And she did just that by denying Ignatieff in the dying strides.
The latter had looked like landing an all-the-way success until the Noel Wilsontrained filly came with a wet sail to snatch a neck verdict.
‘‘She was well forward when we bought her but her first run was a disaster. Don’t ask me what happened,’’ said the York handler.
‘‘Twelve days ago at Doncaster she was fourth, beaten a length, which was a great run so we have come here quite confident.
‘‘She’s owned by a man local to Beverley and he has been talking about the Hilary Needler since the day we bought her, so that’s the aim.
‘‘We needed to win one first and Paul (Quinn) said the ground was way too quick for her and not to run her on that ground again.
‘‘He said inside the final furlong he has given her a flick and she has finally let herself down, but we won’t run her on firm ground again.
‘‘She’s done some nice work with older horses so we will take her home and try and get her ready for Beverley.
‘‘Let’s hope the heavens open.’’ Trainer David Brown also hopes Paquerettza (18-1) can go on to better things after she made a winning reappearance in the Boddingtons Redcar Straight-Mile Championship Handicap (Qualifier).
After tracking the leaders, Paul Mulrennan brought the filly to lead over a furlong out and hold Tarzan and Rising Kheleyf, who dead-heated for second place, by half a length.
Trainer David Barron and jockey Phillip Makin enjoyed a near 54-1 double with House Of Frills (18-1) and Jaconet (15-8 favourite).
The former made a winning debut in the Racing UK Channel 432 Selling Stakes, while Jaconet completed a hat-trick with victory in the Book Tickets Online redcarracing.co.uk Fillies’ Handicap.
Topolski had little trouble landing the odds in the concluding Go Racing At Thirsk This Saturday Handicap.
