MARTYN Moxon is refusing to taking Worcestershire lightly, despite the LV Division One new boys losing their first two four day games of the new season.
Yorkshire are at Headingley in the County Championship today on the back of a nervy draw against Durham over the weekend.
Aside from Adil Rashid, who will miss the game because he is on England Lions duty, Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket will be able to call upon his big guns once again.
“I don’t think it matters who we play, they’re all tough games this year,”
stressed Moxon.
“It’s a tough competition, I’ve said that all along.
They’ve (Worcestershire) lost their first two games, but we won’t be taking that lightly.
“The key is for us to play well enough to go out and win the match.
“If you have just one bad day, then you find yourselves in trouble.”
Moxon will have, no doubt, been more relieved than delighted to leave the North- East on Saturday with nine points under his belt.
There were obvious positives, Gerard Brophy’s form with the bat the main one, but losing wickets in quick succession on the final day angered the boss.
Yorkshire, batting to save the match, slumped from 71- 1 to 186-7 in their second innings.
It was a problem that occurred on numerous occasions last year, and one that must be eradicated if they are going to challenge at the top end of the division.
Moxon said: “We talked about it over the winter.
“We are trying to eradicate losing clumps of wickets with the bat, but we also lost our discipline in the field as well.
“We have got the strategies in place to put that right, and it’s up to us to put them in action.”
Meanwhile, Bresnan has admitted that he was not surprised to be left out of the England Lions squad to face the West Indies at Derby on Thursday.
The all-rounder, who bowled well for the MCC against champion county Durham earlier this month, was omitted from the England shadow squad.
But he said: “I wasn’t surprised or disappointed not to be involved. The lads there are quite worthy of being called up. I’ve got to keep doing the right things.
Eventually I will get my chance.”
Left-arm spinner David Wainwright is the only twirler named in Moxon’s 12-man squad and could get the nod ahead of pace bowler Ajmal Shahzad.
