MARTYN Moxon says he should know what Yorkshire can realistically aim for this season by Saturday night.
The White Rose director of cricket is hopeful that his squad can cope with the rigours of challenging on four fronts, but a County Championship match against champions Durham today should give him a better idea.
The signs are promising after Sunday’s opening day Friends Provident Trophy win at Riverside.
Moxon said: “We said going into this week that by Saturday night we should have an idea of where we are at. We will have had two tough games in two competitions.
We have won one, but we start at 0-0 again in the Championship.
“We feel very much that this is a week that will show us where we are at because we regard Durham as the best team as far as Championship cricket is concerned.
“They are also a very good team as far as one-day cricket is concerned. We have got a lot of hard work to do for the next four days.
“Hopefully we can compete in all four comps – that is the idea. We did well in one-day cricket last year, but there are some tough teams out there.
It is going to be a tough competition.”
With Moxon regarding Durham as the yardstick in terms of both the Friends Provident Trophy, which they won in 2007, and the Championship, of which they are the defending champions, it made Sunday’s 80-run Friends Provident win all the more impressive.
“It was very pleasing because we knew that it was going to be a tough match,”
continued Moxon, a former coach of Durham.
He has named a 13-man squad for today’s contest, including rookie off-spinner James Finch in the party, although the 20-year-old is unlikely to play.
Moxon has not yet revealed his hand with Yorkshire’s opening partnership, although it seems likely that Jacques Rudolph will partner Joe Sayers.
