MICHAEL Vaughan fell for a frustrating 43 in his bid to find early-season form with Yorkshire and earn a Test recall next month.

Former England captain Vaughan showed moments of his undoubted class to serenely progress at exactly a run a ball before being bowled through the gate by former West Indies spinner Gareth Breese as the visitors were reduced to 109 for two against Durham.

The 34-year-old is one of the contenders to fill the number three position against the West Indians at Lords on May 6 and was hoping to discover his name in the squad when it was scheduled to be announced tomorrow morning.

He will get a few more innings to prove his worth, however, after the England management opted to delay the naming of the party for ten days.

Despite looking in complete control in the Friends Provident Trophy encounter - one murderous pulled four off Steve Harmison was Vaughan at his 2002-03 best - he perished just as Yorkshire were developing a commanding position.

In as early as the ninth over of Yorkshire's innings today, he was off the mark second ball and majestically drove Graham Onions for four from his third.

Jacques Rudolph was closing in on a half-century, but was outscored in stands with opening partner Andrew Gale, who top-edged a pull off Callum Thorp to long leg, and Vaughan whose innings provided the bulk of a 78-run stand for the second wicket.
