SANS FRONTIERES can dent the lofty reputation of Delegator in the banshahouse stables.com Craven Stakes at Newmarket.
Seen as the ideal starting point for colts with Classic potential, the race has nevertheless thrown up a few surprises down the years.
Brian Meehan’s Delegator is likely to be sent off a warm order for this Grade Three contest, as he has recently been backed from 33-1 in to 7-1 for the Guineas.
However, the likes of Raven’s Pass, King’s Best, Three Valleys and Nayef have all been turned over in the Craven, which has a habit of turning up a shock winner.
With that in mind, the unexposed Sans Frontieres may prove the value call.
The form of Sans Frontieres’ Lingfield maiden win was also recently boosted, so he may be worth taking a chance on. Henry Cecil has started the season in great form and Twice Over can get back on the winning trail in the Weatherbys Earl of Sefton Stakes.
His last campaign began and ended with two fantastic performances – beating Raven’s Pass in the Craven and finishing second to New Approach in the Champion Stakes. But it is fair to say it was a mixed bag in between.
While John Gosden’s Virtual may give him something to think about, this looks an ideal first port of call.
Equiano never quite reproduced the brilliant form of his Royal Ascot win for Barry Hills, but he has had excuses and is the one to be on in the Connaught Access Flooring Abernant Stakes.
He looked a sprinter with a huge future when winning the King’s Stand, but played up before the start of his next two races, which might explain his defeats.
Having escaped a penalty, Equiano may still prove a class above his rivals.
There is also a competitive card at Ripon, where William Haggas, who has a good strike-rate at the North Yorkshire venue, can score with Mutamaashi.
Having been handed a mark of 85, Haggas obviously thinks he is capable of picking up a decent little race like the Ripon ‘‘Cock O’ The North’’ Handicap.
Shark Man was second to a well-regarded type in Soccer last time and should go very close in the wolverhamptonracecourse.co.uk Maiden Stakes at Dunstall Park.
There is another decent fixture at Cheltenham, where Amicelli holds all of the aces in the Blade Group Hunters’ Chase.
