Non-league round-up

UNDERDOGS Billingham Synthonia pulled off a shock against Durham City to lift the Durham Challenge Cup for the first time in 18 years.

Played at West Auckland, Synners’ hero was striker Jamie Magowan who hit the winner eight minutes from the end to maintain his record of scoring in every round.

There were plenty of chances in the first half. Durham’s Richard Smith and Synners’ David Abel went close for their respective sides, and Synners’ Colin Iley had an effort scrambled off the line.

The biggest talking point in the first half came when Synners’ defender Adam Clough appeared to push a Gavin Cogdon shot away from goal with his hand, but to Durham’s fury, the referee awarded a corner.

The game was decided nine minutes from the end. Durham keeper Craig Turns was penalised for handling a back pass, and Simon Shaw set up the free-kick for Magowan to blast home, and ensure Synners’ first competition win since 1991.

To make matters worse for Durham, they were knocked off the top of the UniBond League First Division by Skelmersdale, who beat Clitheroe.

Synners’ boss Chris Rooney said: “I thought our commitment and determination shone through. Durham are a very good side, but I thought we wanted it more.”

In the SNL, title chasing Spennymoor Town were held to a goalless draw at Tow Law, with goalkeeper Niki Lawson ensuring his side stayed in the game.

Northallerton stayed in the bottom three after losing 3-0 at Penrith, while in the second division Stokesley easily won their derby against Marske 3-0.
