AMONG the 15 trainers opening their doors to the public today is James Bethell, whose Tupgill Stables are at Coverham.

Mr Bethell and his staff are looking forward to the annual open event and with good reason after a hugely successful flat season last year – and optimism high of similar success this year.

“The 2008 flat season was very successful for us,” he said. “We had 18 winners out of 23 horses, giving us a very good strike rate. We also had 18 seconds, many of which were by narrow margins that could have gone either way.”

Among the horses sure to attract the attention of punters today are Bethell’s two-year-olds.

“Out of three two-year olds, we had two winners.

Rowayton won her maiden impressively first time out at Redcar, and Hartley won by seven lengths at Catterick on only his second outing.

Both horses are rated above 80 and are looking exciting prospects for the 2009 season.

“Although we only have a handful of two-year olds again this season, it looks as though we might have one or two potential stars.

“Bobby Elliott rides for us twice a week and feels that Grey Garth could be very useful, and there are still shares available in him.”

Bethell added: “We look forward to seeing many fellow racing enthusiasts during the open day. I am sure I am speaking on behalf of all the participating trainers, when I say they are assured of a warm welcome.”
