SUNDERLAND’s reserves failed to get the win they needed to secure the title as they were held by Everton in Hetton last night.

Neil Bailey’s side dominated the game but could not find a way past former Middlesbrough keeper Carlo Nash.

The Black Cats’ best chance came in the third minute when Martyn Waghorn sent Jordan Cook clean through but Nash did enough to put him off.

Waghorn twice tested Nash with long-range shots in the first half, and the striker smashed a left-foot volley a yard wide in the 30th minute after the ball dropped on the edge of the box.

Sunderland did not have it all their own way, though, and John Paul Kissock hit a shot just over in the 24th minute after Nick Colgan has saved Kieran Agard’s shot.

Waghorn was the main man – especially in the opening period – and a powerful run by him in the 35th minute nearly led to the opening goal. Nash dived at the striker’s feet to deny him.

Sunderland created fewer chances after the break and had a scare late on when Jean-Yves M’voto’s header was going into his own net until Colgan saved the day.

Bailey’s side will get another chance to win the title next Tuesday when they go to Manchester City.
