ANTHONY GORDON will head into the international break nursing a hip injury that is likely to force his withdrawal from the England squad.
Gordon has been named in Lee Carsley’s squad for England’s final two Nations League group games against Greece and Ireland, but was forced to hobble off in the final ten minutes of Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
The winger has suffered a recurrence of the hip injury that was troubling him last month, and headed straight down the tunnel after being replaced by Harvey Barnes in the 80th minute of his side’s victory.
“It looks like a similar problem to the one he had a few weeks ago with his hip,” confirmed Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. “We hope it’s not serious, but I don’t know yet because I’ve not spoken to him.”
However, when asked whether he now expected Gordon to be withdrawn from England duty, Howe added: “Because he had to come off, I would say yes.”

On an excellent day for Newcastle, that saw second-half goals from Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Barnes overturn the first-half deficit that was inflicted by a header from Murillo, Howe admitted his sole frustration was the first-half booking that will result in a suspension for Dan Burn.
Burn was booked as he halted a Forest counter-attack after referee Anthony Taylor allowed to play continue despite Ryan Yates catching Tino Livramento in the face with an elbow.
It was Burn’s fifth yellow card of the season, meaning he will be forced to sit out the Monday night home game with West Ham United that will mark Newcastle’s return to action after the international break.
“It’s very rare you see me running to the fourth official, but I thought Tino had been elbowed in the face,” said Howe. “It was a clear free-kick, but it wasn’t given and Dan pays the price for that because he feels like has to make the foul in that moment.
“We knew we were going to lose Dan at some stage, and potentially Fab (Schar) and Joey (Joelinton) are in the same position. I’m probably pleased we’re not losing them all at the same time. It will be a huge blow to lose Dan, he’s done very well this season.”
