LEWIS HALL is being strongly tipped to feature in the England squad Lee Carsley will name tomorrow ahead of Nations League matches against Greece and Ireland.

Carsley will name his final squad prior to stepping aside for new permanent boss Thomas Tuchel as England prepare to take on Greece in Athens next Thursday and host Ireland at Wembley three days later.

Left-back has been a problem position for quite a while now, with Gareth Southgate fielding Kieran Trippier on the left of the back four for all bar one of England’s matches at this summer’s Euros, even though the Newcastle United defender, who has subsequently retired from international football, is more usually a right-back.

Carsley has selected Levi Colwill, Rico Lewis and Trent Alexander-Arnold at left-back in England’s four Nations League matches so far, but none are naturals in the position and all would prefer to be playing elsewhere.

With Luke Shaw injured and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell having seemingly fallen out of favour, Hall is one of the few English left-backs currently playing in the Premier League.

The 20-year-old has won five England caps at Under-21s level, and there is a good chance he could earn his first senior call-up when Carsley names his squad tomorrow.

Former Newcastle United skipper Alan Shearer thinks Hall should be part of Carsley’s squad selection, having been hugely impressed by his performances in the Premier League this season.

“Lewis Hall is not far away from an England call-up,” said Shearer, who was speaking to Betfair. “If he does get a call-up, he will have deserved it. If he doesn't get one this time and he keeps playing the way he is, then it won't be long.

“Lewis is not just knocking - he is banging on the door of the senior team. I watched him closely at the weekend and he had a fantastic game against Bukayo Saka, one of the best players in the Premier League and Arsenal's danger man. He had a great game and hardly gave him a kick and rightfully was given player of the match.”

Anthony Gordon will be part of Carsley’s squad for England’s final two Nations League group games, with Nick Pope also expected to retain his place as part of the goalkeeping group. Tino Livramento should also be selected after he was handed a late promotion to the group for last month’s games with Greece and Finland.
