EDDIE HOWE has come up with a plan specifically designed to deal with Arsenal’s corners – and is confident his Newcastle United side can blunt the Gunners’ set-piece specialists this lunchtime.

Arsenal have turned corner-taking into an art form under Mikel Arteta, and have posed a series of problems from set-pieces already this season.

Having had a recovery session on Thursday in the wake of their Carabao Cup win over Chelsea, Newcastle’s players were completing their pre-match preparations ahead of the Arsenal game on the training pitches at Darsley Park yesterday.

And Howe revealed that focusing on some set-piece specifics was going to be a key part of his side’s work ahead of the Arsenal game.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of yesterday’s training session, Howe said: “We haven’t looked at it yet, but today we will. Today, we’ll go into our match preparation with the players.

“Earlier in the week, we’ve been looking at Chelsea, and yesterday was about recovering, we couldn’t work with the players. Today, we will, and we’ll cram all of our match preparation into one day.

“I think the set-plays is always about your organisation and your structures. And obviously you need players to want to head the ball.

“I’m always reluctant to talk too much about set-plays because of the intricacies of what goes into it. Hopefully, we can nail it and get it right.”

Much of Arsenal’s set-piece threat stems from the quality of Bukayo Saka’s delivery, particularly from corners.

Gabriel has proved adept at powering onto Saka’s inswinging balls into the box, with the centre-half expected to start today’s game after recovering from injury this week.

Howe said: “They’re (Arsenal) a big side, they’ve got great delivery, and obviously they practice and rehearse set moves.

“They prepare for the opposition as well, so I think they’re very good. We’re going to have to be very good to repel their threat.”
