LEO HJELDE’S return to first-team action was a reward for his performances in training, with Regis Le Bris insisting he would not be concerned if he had to turn to the defender on a more regular basis in the next few weeks.

Hjelde made his first Championship appearance of the season when he came off the bench in the closing stages of the away in at Luton, and also appeared as a substitute in the second half of last weekend’s victory over Oxford United.

The Norwegian was a fairly regular presence in the first team in the second half of last season, featuring in 11 matches under Michael Beale and Mike Dodds.

His chances under Le Bris have been much more limited, but the Black Cats’ current head coach insists that is not a reflection on either his attitude or ability level.

Le Bris has been impressed with Hjelde’s approach to training at the Academy of Light, and would not be worried about having to turn to him if one or more members of Sunderland’s current back four were to become unavailable.

When asked whether Hjelde’s return to first-team action was a reward for his efforts in training, Le Bris said: “Yes, absolutely. It is very important because he trains properly. And when you have the opportunity to play, you can keep the connection (with the team), even if they understand that at Dennis (Cirkin), Luke (O’Nien), Meps (Chris Mepham), Trai (Hume) - they have done very well.

“You just have to accept that they are playing well and that this is good for the team.
It is good for you as well, because you know the level that you have to reach.

“And when the window (of opportunity) is open, you have to be ready. If you're not, the next chance will be further away. With all the players, it is a competition.”
