Aaron Connolly made his debut off the substitutes’ bench in Sunday’s win at Hull, and the forward will hope to secure a first Sunderland start against Luton.

However, with Wilson Isidor having made it three goals in his last four games with the winner at the weekend, Connolly is likely to have to be content with another outing on the bench.

Luton have had a difficult start to the season following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

The Hatters ended the weekend sitting in 17th in the Championship table, although they enjoyed a morale-boosting win on Saturday, seeing off local rivals Watford 3-0.

Centre-half Mads Andersen remains unavailable because of injury, and Luton could also be without Teden Mengi, who was forced to sit out Saturday’s win over Watford with a knock.

Tom Holmes is regarded as a doubt after being unable to finish the weekend win, and could be replaced by Daiki Hashioka against Sunderland.
