REGIS LE BRIS claims Aaron Connolly’s selfless substitute display at Hull City proves he is already buying into the team ethic at Sunderland.

Connolly made his senior Black Cats debut when he came off the bench in the 74th minute of Sunday’s game at the MKM Stadium to replace goalscorer Wilson Isidor.

Having been released by Hull at the end of last season, Connolly, who bared his soul in an emotional interview during the international break, would have been desperate to make a major impact against the Tigers.

However, he was sent onto the field with clear instructions to close down Hull’s defenders and help Sunderland successfully manage the game, and delivered with a disciplined and focused performance.

That, more than anything, pleased Le Bris, who will be pondering whether to hand Connolly a first Sunderland start this week as his side tackle games against Luton Town and Oxford United in the space of less than four days.

“It was good to see him (Connolly) on the pitch,” said the Sunderland boss. “He has worked very well in the last few weeks, and he was ready to play.

“It’s like a symbol for him, getting back onto the pitch and into the team. He played (at Hull) last season, and he was really looking forward to playing in that game.

“He worked really well for the team. Sometimes, with a substitute, his behaviour can be a little bit selfish, but with him, that wasn’t the case. It was very clear, he was there to help the team and work for the team.

“The link with the team is very natural because he is a hard worker. He can be a good finisher for us, but it was a battle when he went onto the pitch (at Hull), and he did very well. I am sure he will score as soon as possible.”

For most of the summer, Sunderland’s lack of attacking options was cited as a major weakness.

However, Eliezer Mayenda started the season impressively, and is set to return from injury in the next few days, while Isidor has now scored three goals in his last four games after breaking from deep inside his own half to score the winner against Hull.

Throw in a hungry Connolly, who has admitted he has a point to prove, and you suddenly have the makings of an effective attacking unit.

“I think (Isidor) has been outstanding,” said Black Cats full-back Trai Hume. “Particularly the work he's done for the team off the ball. He's getting his goals as well.

“He's started really well, as Eliezer did. They're both working for the team and that's benefiting all of us.

“Aaron was excellent when he came on in helping us manage the game, slowing it down and winning us fouls. That came with the experience he has. I thought we needed that when he came on, and he delivered.”
