MICHAEL Carrick liked what he saw from Micah Hamilton on what was a "big step" for the winger as he made his first Championship start at Watford.
Hamilton featured in six of Boro's first eight league games but all as a substitute before he got the nod at Vicarage Road, replacing Riley McGree on the left side of the attack.
Carrick described the swap as a "natural squad decision" after McGree had returned from a lay-off to star against Stoke City and West Brom, with Boro's boss regularly stressing the need to be cautious with players coming back from injuries.
Carrick also felt Hamilton had earned his first start, and although Boro ended up leaving Watford empty-handed, the head coach was encouraged by the former Manchester City winger's display.

"There was too sides to it really," said Carrick of his selection decision.
"Micah was ready to play and I thought he did well and fitted in well, and a little bit of Riley coming back and playing two games. It was just a natural squad decision.
"I thought Micah was bright. He was really bright, connected really well and settled in fine. For his first start he can be pleased.
"We're trying to do what's best for him at this stage. He's shown some really good signs and it was a big step for him today and I thought he did well."
