ALAN BROWNE admits he was left feeling “embarrassed” after Illan Meslier’s remarkable stoppage-time error enabled Sunderland to claim a dramatic equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Leeds United at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats looked to be heading to defeat when the game entered stoppage time with Leeds holding a 2-1 lead.
Sunderland’s final chance fell to Browne, with the ball dropping to his feet after Anthony Patterson’s long free-kick forward was nodded into his path.
The substitute looked to have wasted the opportunity when he chipped a poor ball into the area, but Meslier somehow allowed it to squirm through his grasp, handing Sunderland an unlikely point.
Browne said: “I’d turned away, I thought the lads would be going mad then the keeper chucked it in the net.
“I’m almost embarrassed but I’ll still claim it, too right.
“Whether we deserved it or not I’m not sure. They really came at us after we scored but we had a couple of spells in the second half.
“We didn’t really create the chance that we needed but luckily I came up with the goods.”
