Here's how Sunderland and Middlesbrough players rated after the Black Cats won the Wear-Tees derby 1-0 at the Stadium of Light:
Sunderland:
6 Patterson: Boro only had one shot on target.
7 Hume: Perhaps fortunate not to get first half red card but took advantage with solid display.
8 Mepham: Rock solid debut. Boro had chances early on but didn’t get a look-in after break.
8 O’Nien: New partner but another solid display and clean sheet.
7 Cirkin: Boro created a couple of early chances down right but Cirkin good again.
7 Neil: Disciplined midfield display, protected defence.
9 Rigg: Another immense display from the midfielder, who came up with the moment to settle the game.
7 Bellingham: Did the hard yards and rarely lost the ball.
8 Roberts: Troubled Boro every time he had the ball. Made the goal.
8 Mundle: Had the better of Ayling and played part in the goal.
7 Mayenda: Handled the occasion and didn’t let Boro defenders settle.

MIDDLESBROUGH:
6 Dieng: Unfortunate for the goal after Edmundson block.
5 Ayling: Mistake in build-up to goal. Struggled with Mundle throughout.
6 Edmundson: Good first half block to stop Roberts. Unfortunate with goal.
5 Clarke: Way below his best.
5 Borges: Difficult afternoon for the Brazilian, who was again left isolated on left flank.
6 Morris: Excellent first half tackle to deny charging Roberts. All-action again.
5 Hackney: Too often sloppy in possession.
5 Jones: Another disappointing display from the winger who needs to improve if he’s to keep his place in the side.
6 Conway: Boro’s liveliest player and likeliest route to goal but should have done better with first half header.
5 Azaz: Doesn’t look a natural fit on the left. Couple of efforts in the first half.
5 Latte Lath: Chance late in the first half but other than that was contained and frustrated by Sunderland.
Substitutes:
5 Hamilton (for Azaz, 62): Saw fair bit of the ball but couldn’t force breakthrough.
6 Doak (for Jones, 62): Offered something different on the right.
Burgzorg (for Latte Lath, 74): N/A
Subs not used: Brynn, Barlaser, McGree, Dijksteel, Hunt, McCabe
