Newcastle United fans have been named as some of the rudest fans in the Premier League, ranking in the top five for most sweary supporters.

The findings come from a study by QR Code Generator, after the analysis of the 200 most popular posts and subsequent comments on each team's page on website Reddit.

On average, Newcastle United fans used 69.12 swear words per 1,000 posts.

This count is 12 per cent higher than the general average for Premier League fans.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, said: "This study highlights a consistency among the teams with the highest swear counts and those that had the most tumultuous seasons in recent years."

“Football has always been a passionate sport, but it’s disheartening to see such a high average of inappropriate language used by fans, especially when used to attack individual players.

“Abuse against players is a recurring issue within this sport, and it’s clear that more severe steps need to be taken against this form of virtual harassment.”
