Here's how Newcastle's players rated in the Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out success against Nottingham Forest:
6 Pope: Couldn’t do anything about the goal. Wasn’t tested much, even when Forest were on top.
6 Trippier: Solid and hungry in the first half. Linked up well with Almiron down the right. Replaced on the hour.
7 Krafth: Limited Forest’s attack in the first half and didn’t panic when the home side had a good spell in the second.
6 Burn: Goalline clearance in the first half. Involved with Joelinton in the half clearance that led to Forest’s leveller.
5 Hall: Unconvincing display from the left-back. Sloppy in possession and beaten too easily.
8 Tonali: Started the move that led to Newcastle opener with touch to Almiron after just 10 seconds. Ran himself to exhaustion and needed a breather after half an hour. Hugely encouraging return.
7 Willock: On hand to put Newcastle ahead after just 18 seconds and was full of running in the early stages. Looked distraught as he was forced off injured on 14 minutes.
5 Joelinton: Didn’t look his usual self. Sloppy and careless in possession. Missed his penalty.
7 Almiron: Just hours after news of transfer interest from Fulham emerged, Almiron was bright and full of running in the first half. Set Isak away in build-up to first goal and went close with one low effort. Didn’t see much of the ball early in the second half and replaced.
7 Barnes: Bright early on and then came to life in the late stages when Newcastle pushed for a winner.
7 Isak: Early strike was only parried allowing Willock to tap in. Wasn’t at his best after that but scored his penalty.
Substitutes:
7 Bruno (for Willock, 14): Celebrated a tackle just after being introduced. All-action. Scored his penalty.
7 Gordon (for Almiron, 61): Made an impact from the bench.
7 Livramento (for Trippier, 61): His energy made a difference late on as Newcastle pressed Forest back. Linked up well with Barnes.
7 Longstaff (for Tonali, 61): Provided fresh legs in the midfield and scored the winning penalty.
Subs not used: Ruddy, Targett, Osula, Murphy, Kelly
Man of the Match: An exciting glimpse of the future with Tonali quickly making his mark back in the side.
