NEWCASTLE United will make a fresh push to sign James Trafford from Burnley this week but any move for the goalkeeper will hinge on the Magpies being able to offload either Martin Dubravka or Odysseas Vlachodimos.

United held talks with Burnley over Trafford earlier this summer but at that stage were unable to strike a deal with the Championship club.

Vlachodimos then arrived from Nottingham Forest as part of the deal that saw Elliot Anderson move the other way, while experienced John Ruddy also joined, but Newcastle's interest in Trafford didn't disappear and talks are now set to resume.

Burnley boss Scott Parker admitted over the weekend that exits from Turf Moor are likely this week, but Newcastle's preference is an initial loan deal for Trafford with an obligation to make the move permanent, according to reports.

First, though, Newcastle will have to find loan or permanent moves for Dubravka or Vlachodimos - or both.

Dubravka missed Sunday's game at Bournemouth after suffering concussion in training, but there was no explanation for Vlachodimos' absence, with Ruddy instead named as Nick Pope's deputy on the bench.

Vlachodimos was also left out of the squad for the opening weekend victory over Southampton.

With Trafford having been at the centre of transfer speculation throughout the summer, Burnley signed a couple of new keepers but the 21-year-old has started the first three Championship games for the Clarets.

Quizzed on Trafford earlier this month, Burnley boss Parker said: "What you need to understand is that speculation is speculation. James is here and James has got the shirt, hence why he played.

“To answer your question, is he the number one, at this moment in time he is.

“What happens in the future? I don't know, I can’t answer that. He’s another one that had a tough season last year but he’s an exceptional keeper."

The priority for Newcastle in the final days of the summer window remains strengthening at centre-half. The Magpies are still locked in talks with Crystal Palace as they push for a breakthrough in their pursuit of Marc Guehi.

Guehi again captained Palace over the weekend against West Ham and although Oliver Glasner's side suffered their second straight defeat, the England international told of his pride in wearing the armband.

He said: “It’s an honour (to be captain). I’m happy, I’m glad, learning off Joel (Ward), Macca (James McArthur) that was here, some really big names, big characters. I’m just glad to be leading the team out.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe reiterated his desire to bolster his squad after Sunday's Bournemouth draw but said Newcastle wouldn't make panic signings.

"We’ll just carry on about our business. We’re not in control of it so we’ll see," said the head coach.

“I think we’ve made it clear, we’d love to add to the group but they have to be the right players at the right price for the short and long term benefit of the football club.

"We’re not in control of it, we’ll work as hard as we can to try and improve the squad."

United are back in action on Wednesday night when Sandro Tonali is available to make his return against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup.

Howe said: “I think we’ve got top quality players here and we’ve still got a few more players to come back from injury so hopefully we’ll make the group stronger. Sandro’s ban is finished, so we’ll be delighted to welcome him back. He’s another top quality addition.”
