MIDDLESBROUGH winger Isaiah Jones is set for the opportunity to make an impact on the international stage after receiving his first call-up to represent Guyana.

The 25-year-old was born in London but his mother is Guyanese.

Jones started the process of obtaining a Guyanese passport last year and has now been called up for the first time. He could make his international debut when Guyana are in CONCACAF Nations League action next month.

They face Suriname and Martinique on September 5 and 9.

Jones has established himself as a key figure at Middlesbrough since being plucked from the London non-league scene in 2019. He's approaching 150 appearances in red and white and signed a new long-term contract earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick has thanked the Boro fans who turned out in force for the club's open training session earlier this week.

Boro opened the doors at the Riverside on Monday, with around 8,000 fans in the stands to watch the players train.

Carrick said: “The open training day was a big success and I really enjoyed it. I’d like to thank everyone who turned out.

"I thought it was a really good afternoon and it was nice to see so many young faces shouting and screaming and having that enthusiasm to see the players up close, which they don’t get a chance to do that often. The boys really responded to that and enjoyed it as well.

“I think it’s a really good idea at a good time of the year with the school holidays. It gives the younger generation a chance to come - whether it’s their first time, second time etc. we want them to enjoy coming and wanting to come again. I think that’s an important part of growing the club and evolving the fanbase, protecting the future of the club."

Boro are hoping young fans will be back at the Riverside for next Tuesday's Carabao Cup second round tie against Stoke after moving the kick-off forward to 7.15pm in the hope of making the fixture more family friendly.

Carrick said: "Days like Monday and the work we do in and around the community as well to try and promote the club in a positive manner hopefully all helps. Certainly, the decision for the earlier kick off is a really good idea and hopefully we can create a really good atmosphere and a special night.

"If it’s anyone’s first time to come and sample that experience and atmosphere, hopefully it won’t just be a one time thing because they’ll want to come back for more."
