SUPERSTITIOUS types may well be tempted by a horse owned by three farriers at Redcar’s popular Gin and Gents evening meeting on Saturday.
If lucky horseshoes are anything to go by, Hurstwood, trained in North Yorkshire by Peter Niven, could be the answer to division one of the Join Racing TV For 12.00 This Weekend Handicap.
The seven-year-old gelding is co-owned by three blacksmiths who make up the Hard Held Partnership, and they have enjoyed success with the horse at Redcar before.
In 2022, he struck three times in a row, including a brace of wins at the seaside track and won again, this time at Ripon, last year.
The son of Dark Angel performed with a lot of credit at Redcar to be second of 11 behind Stormy Pearl on July 31 and looks ready for another bold show off a pound lower than his last winning mark, with capable apprentice Mark Winn taking off a handy three pounds.
The Gin and Gents meeting is a chance for couples to wear their finery, and Jewel Maker would be a fitting winner of the opening Every Race Live On Racing TV Apprentice Handicap.
Tim Easterby’s charge won the race a year ago and has been running consistently this year at the age of nine.
He went all the way to Windsor last time and was staying on strongly to be fourth of 11, suggesting that Jewel Maker could sparkle again at Redcar under five-pound claimer Alexander Fielding.
Easterby – always a trainer to fear at Redcar – will also fancy his chances of hitting the high notes with Soul Singer, ridden by Sean Kirrane, in the preceding racingtv.com Handicap. The gelding was a promising second of 12 on Ladies’ Day at Redcar in June.
However, it is also worth noting that Michael Dods’ Sparkling Red has won once and been second twice in three runs at Redcar. Although his last three runs have been disappointing, he’s fitted with a visor for the first time and has dropped to a mark six pounds lower than his win at Redcar in May last year. With the strong assistance of Paul Mulrennan in the saddle, he’s tempting at a big price if back to form.
The Bakers Tailoring EBF Restricted Novice Stakes looks tailor-made for Karl Burke’s Jungle Drums, a winner on his debut at Hamilton before performing with credit to be second in a Class One race at Newbury. Shane Gray is in the saddle and it’s hard to see the Bungle Inthejungle colt being beaten.
David O’Meara’s Zozimus goes for a hat-trick in the Marske Fabrications and Engineering Handicap following back-to-back victories at Pontefract. The six-year-old can defy top-weight to keep the winning sequence going.
Young Rhys Elliott is having a great run of late, with a variety of trainers attracted by the value of his seven-pound claim. He’s back onboard Gastronomy for Phil Kirby in the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap after giving the horse a peach of a ride to win cosily over 1m 6f at Redcar two runs ago.
Two miles looked beyond him at Newcastle last time and a return to 1m 6f may see him back to winning ways.
The seven-race card finishes with division two of the Join Racing TV For 12.00 This Weekend Handicap. Ruth Carr’s Hard Solution, ridden by Jo Mason, is a course and distance winner and looked to be returning to form when fourth of 10 at Southwell last time.
