CRYSTAL Palace chairman Steve Parish has reiterated that he won't stand in the way of Marc Guehi joining Newcastle United - but only if and after the "right bid" arrives.

United and Palace remain in talks over the England international after a string of Newcastle offers were rejected.

Guehi wore the captain's armband and played the full 90 minutes as Palace started their Premier League season with a 2-1 defeat at Brentford on Sunday.

After the game, Palace boss Oliver Glasner said Guehi's situation was unchanged and the defender was only focused on his current club.

But Newcastle remain hopeful of landing their top defensive target ahead of the transfer deadline later this month, with an added sense of urgency on Tyneside after Fabian Schar's sending off in the opening day win over Southampton, meaning the Swiss international must now serve a three-match ban.

Parish has been vocal on the Guehi situation and once again outlined his and Palace's stance.

He told talkSPORT: "I said it in the week, Marc is a great player and we are a club that have to accept where we are right now.

"We are not a destination, we are somewhere you travel through and if we get the right bids for players, in the right order, then we need to look at them. We haven't got that at the moment. If we get that then things will change, but right now Marc is a Palace player."

Despite the lengthy and public negotiations, Parish says he's on good terms with Newcastle and sporting director Paul Mitchell, though did reveal United aren't the only club to have shown an interest in Guehi.

He said: "People have different relationships with different football clubs and you try and make it work the best way possible. Everyone is trying to do the best for their club and we are always respectful when we get a bid for a player.

"We are very respectful of Newcastle United and Paul Mitchell is somebody I have an incredible amount of respect for. I have known him a long time and he has been very good to me in football. He and I have had a chat about this.

"Inevitably the agents are involved and have a point of view, their decent guys. We’ve spoken to other clubs that have expressed interest as well. First thing is we need to get a deal we agree on. There will have to be a conversation on personal terms."

Palace boss Glasner said he had nothing new to offer on the situation after his side's defeat at Brentford.

“Everyone can see he is completely focused on Crystal Palace and the game," he said.

"We haven't spoken about transfers because we were so focused on the game, so there's no news."

Palace are said to be holding out for at least £65m as a guaranteed fee for Guehi. Newcastle will continue to assess their options this week but Howe said Schar's suspension doesn't mean Newcastle will cave to Palace's demands.

“Of course, we’re looking in the transfer market. We’ve got a period of time left, and we’ll see what we can do," he said.

“Could we do something in the market? Possibly, but conditions have to be right for us. As I’ve said all along, we can’t do something that goes against the long-term good of the football club, so we’ll try to make the right decision.”
