Here's how Sunderland's players rated in the 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday:

7 Patterson: Didn’t have much to do but solid when called upon.

8 Hume: Hardly troubled defensively. Effective going forward and linked up well with Roberts.

8 O’Nien: Two goals in two games for the defender, who was on hand to stab home Sunderland’s third.

7 Alese: A second successive clean sheet and another assured showing in the heart of the defence.

8 Cirkin: Continued excellent start to the season with goal that set Sunderland on their way. Alongside Clarke, caused Sheffield Wednesday no end of problems down left flank.

8 Neil: Bossed the midfield battle and let Rigg and Bellingham express themselves. Didn’t put a foot wrong.

9 Rigg: In for the injured Alan Browne, this was perhaps Rigg’s best display in a Sunderland shirt. Snapped into tackles, picked out defence splitting passes, shot at every opportunity. Just immense.

8 Bellingham: Coasted through with elegance. This midfield role seems to suit the teenager.

9 Roberts: Looking like the player from two seasons ago. His cross for Cirkin led to first goal. Deserved to be on the scoresheet himself.

9 Clarke: Sheffield Wednesday quite simply couldn’t cope with the winger, who had a hand in O’Nien’s goal and created Mayenda’s second. Brilliant display.

9 Mayenda: Le Bris’ show of emotion when Mayenda scored his first Sunderland goal was telling. Added a second after the restart. His best performance in red and white will be huge for confidence.
