How did the players fare in Newcastle United's 1-0 win over Southampton?
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
8 Pope: Made an excellent second-half save from Armstrong and showed all his nous to run down the clock in the closing stages
7 Livramento: Made some important blocks and clearances after getting the nod to start ahead of Trippier
3 Schar: Should have known better – Brereton Diaz’s theatrics were ridiculous, but the centre-half played right into his hands
8 Burn: Brilliant at the heart of Newcastle’s back four, blocking shots, winning headers and hacking the ball away
6 Hall: Made a brilliant goalline clearance in the second half, but also had a number of shaky moments in possession
8 Longstaff: A major factor in the Magpies’ win – ran himself into the ground to close down Southampton’s midfielders
7 Guimaraes: Started slowly, but was a major factor in the second half as he threw himself into tackles
9 JOELINTON: Immense – dominated the midfield battle and set the tone for Newcastle’s never-say-die performance
5 Murphy: Started fairly slowly down the right-hand side, and was the player to be sacrificed when Schar was sent off
7 Isak: Had to drop extremely deep in the second half, but helped out his defence after setting up Joelinton’s goal
6 Gordon: Made the occasional dangerous break, but seemed to be lacking some of his usual zip and energy
Subs:
7 Krafth (for Murphy, 30): Enabled Newcastle to hold things together defensively after Schar’s sending off
Barnes (for Gordon, 70)
Kelly (for Hall, 70)
(not used): Dubravka (gk), Trippier, Targett, Willock, Almiron, Osula.
SOUTHAMPTON (3-4-3):
McCarthy 6; Bednarek 6 (Amo-Ameyaw 80), Harwood-Bellis 6, STEPHENS 6; Sugawara 6 (Edozie 46, 5), Smallbone 5, Downes 5, Walker-Peters 6 (Alcaraz 80); Aribo 5 (Dibling 70), Armstrong 4, Brereton Diaz 4 (Archer 70).
Subs (not used): Lumley (gk), Bree, Wood, Taylor.
Man Of The Match: JOELINTON – Scored the only goal of the game and was a defensive colossus at the heart of the Magpies midfield.
