MICHAEL CARRICK is “hoping” there will be positive news on Middlesbrough’s pursuit of Tommy Conway “soon”.

Boro are understood to have agreed a £4.5m fee with Bristol City for the purchase of Conway, who has been their leading attacking target throughout the summer.

The Scotland international is set to have a medical with the Teessiders in the morning, and his transfer should be completed ahead of the weekend.

As is his style, Carrick did want to say too much about Conway’s situation when he addressed the media in the wake of Boro’s Carabao Cup win at Leeds United.

However, he said there would “hopefully” be an update before too long, at which point he would be willing to say more.

Carrick said: “I can’t really say anything. When anyone is our player, I’ll happily talk about it, but until that moment, then out of respect, I can’t really say much. I just don’t think it’s the right thing to do.

“But, sure, as soon as there’s anything, I’ll speak on it. And hopefully there will be soon. Then, we’ll let you know and I’ll be happy to speak about it then.”

Carrick was understandably delighted with his Boro side’s performance as they scored three second-half goals at Elland Road to set up a League Cup second-round tie against Stoke City.

The Boro boss said: “I’m really happy with the boys. We made the changes, but we still wanted to come here and win and that’s what we were after.

“We believe in the squad that we’ve got, and we’ve got a little chapter between now and the international break, a batch of games where everyone will play their part in some way.

“I fully believe that and fully believe in the boys. They all played their part in a big win tonight.

“I don’t really know where to start because there were so many positives, individually, collectively, both sides of the game - with and without the ball - I thought it was a real positive night for us.

“Just really pleased, to keep a clean sheet, score good goals and then individuals were fantastic.”
