CRYSTAL Palace have lined up potential replacements for Marc Guehi should Newcastle succeed in their pursuit of the centre-half, but the London club remain hopeful of keeping the England international at Selhurst Park this summer.

The Magpies have made a third bid for Guehi which remains under consideration by Palace, with negotiations between the two clubs ongoing.

It comes after United's second bid for the 24-year-old - said to be in the region of £50m - was turned down last week.

Palace's valuation of Guehi is in the region of £65m, but the defender only has two years left to run on his current contract.

Palace are willing to make Guehi one of the best paid players in the club's history but if no new agreement can be reached and the defender remains at Selhurst Park, he would be able to negotiate a free transfer from January 2026.

While Palace remain desperate to keep their star defender at the club this summer, they do have plans in place for his exit, with Wolfsburg's Maxence Lacroix - a player boss Oliver Glasner knows well - a leading target.

Guehi captained Palace and played an hour in their pre-season friendly draw with Nantes over the weekend.

Newcastle head coach Howe is determined to add another centre-half to his ranks, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles facing long spells on the sidelines.

After United celebrated Sela Cup success at the weekend, Howe stressed the importance of adding "quality rather than quantity", saying: "We have got such a good squad, anyway, so if you're going to add players to it, they have to push the group to new levels."

Howe added: "We will try to make the right decisions given the conditions that we're working in. The window has been slightly slower this year. It does seem to be picking up now.”

The capture of Guehi is a priority but Newcastle are also keen to sign a right winger, with Chelsea’s Noni Madueke and Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga both on the club's radar.

As things stand, Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy are Howe's options on the right flank, with the latter having enjoyed an extremely impressive pre-season.

Howe said: "I think the team has improved and he's developed with the team. First and foremost he has a brilliant attitude to training and to his individual development.

"He will work tirelessly at his game. Different facets whether it is crossing or finishing, he's always one of the last players off the training pitch. He's a very dedicated guy and I'm really pleased to see him progress his game in the way that he has. It's been a really good pre-season for him."

One wide player who is still expected to leave before the end of the summer window is Ryan Fraser, with Southampton keen on a permanent deal for the 30-year-old, who impressed at St Mary's on loan last term.

Southampton boss Russell Martin said earlier this summer: "I think we're all hopeful that at some point that will happen but he's contracted to Newcastle.

"I think he would love to come back and we would love to keep him. Everyone wants him."
