TEESSIDER Katie Stephens bids to become English Amateur champion today as four golfers set to battle for glory at Seaton Carew.

Stephens, who plays at Middlesbrough Golf Club, takes on Shivani Karthikeyan in the women's final, while Harley Smith and Will Tate go head-to-head in the men's decider.

Fans are welcome to go and watch the final, with the immaculate Seaton course having put on a show this week. It was described as being in "Open Championship condition" before play got underway and hasn't disappointed.

The players tackled two days of strokeplay to whittle down the field before the matchplay stages got underway, with just two now remaining in the men's and women's competition.

Stephens beat Aaliyah Hryniewiecka-Irwin in Saturday's quarter final before holding her nerve to edge past Lincoln's Ellise Rymer in the last four. She'd gone close to booking her final spot on the 17th and 18th before coolly slotting in on a five-footer on the first play-off hole.

Her final opponent Karthikeyan beat Madeleine Smith in the quarter finals on Saturday and then closed out an impressed 4&2 victory over Ellie Monk in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in the men's competition, Smith put on a putting masterclass in the semi-finals against Frazer Jones (Kirkby Muxloe), who had topped the leaderboard after the stroke play stages, holding 103 feet of putts in just 13 holes to ease to a 6&5 victory.

Tate's semi-final final over Lucas Martin was a lot tighter, with The Caversham member eventually prevailing 3&2.

Earlier in the day, Tate had beaten Harry Cox  and Smith got the better of Tom Osborne.
