STEVE Watson has bolstered his Darlington ranks with the capture of former England schoolboy international Archie Small.

The 18-year-old has spent pre-season on trial with Quakers and impressed Watson in training and in his friendly outings.

He was a free agent after being released by Hartlepool at the end of last season, and has now signed a one-year deal with Darlington.

"It's been really good to be part of the squad over the summer," said Small.

"It's been tough and it's a bit more rough and tumble than I'm used to, but I'm working hard in the gym to get myself better. The aim is to establish himself here, that's the aim."

The versatile defender is comfortable playing at centre-half or left-back.

He follows Elliot Forbes through the door at Blackwell Meadows, with the former Gateshead defender reuniting with his former boss Watson.

Forbes, who signed a one-year deal, made 56 appearances for Gateshead. He had loan spells at Spennymoor and Blyth, who he joined permanently on a short-term deal in January.

When that spell came to an end, Watson swooped.

Darlington continue their pre-season away at Dunston tonight (7.30pm kick-off).
