CALLUM WILSON is a doubt for the start of the Premier League season after undergoing a ‘minor procedure’ on his back.
The Newcastle United striker has been plagued by a succession of injuries in the last couple of seasons, and his problems have reappeared at the Magpies’ training camp at Adidas’ global headquarters near Nuremberg in Germany.
Wilson trained with the rest of Newcastle’s first-team squad for a couple of days at the start of last week, but began to complain of an issue in his back.
The problem was assessed, and Wilson was sent for some minor surgery that could rule him out of Newcastle’s season-opener against Southampton on August 17.
“It’s just something he’s (Wilson) been feeling a little bit, so we’re just getting it checked out,” said Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. “Could he miss the start of the season? Let’s see.”
Wilson’s future is currently uncertain, with the 32-year-old having entered the final year of his current contract on Tyneside.

The veteran has been attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League, with West Ham also reportedly lining up a possible bid, and Newcastle’s recruitment team could be tempted to sell rather than allowing Wilson to leave for nothing next summer.
However, Howe continues to value the England international’s experience and goalscoring capabilities and has been pushing to retain the forward as part of his squad for next season.
