Gareth Southgate's departure as England manager on Tuesday has shifted the focus from the nation's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final to the hunt for a new boss.
Early indications from bookmakers suggest that Graham Potter and Eddie Howe are favourites for the top job, with current England U21s head coach Lee Carsley also in consideration.
Readers of The Northern Echo took to Facebook to answer the question of who should succeed Southgate.
Bob Marly stated his preference by commenting, "As much I will like him to stay at the toon Eddie Howe is the perfect manger to replace Southgate."
Newcastle head coach Howe was a popular choice among The Echo's readers, while TV pundit Jamie Carragher posted on X that Howe was the best man for the job "by a long way."
Reader Mark Carter stressed the importance of securing an English successor, saying: "Must be an Englishman 100 per cent.
"Need someone who has an English mentality, someone who can get the best out of the players, only one name that stands out, he will be popular, well-liked and a hit with the fans...Eddie Howe take a bow."
Claire Welburn, along with several other readers, proposed that Jurgen Klopp would be the best choice to replace Southgate.
The former Liverpool manager reportedly turned down the opportunity to become manager of USA in recent days after their early exit from Copa America.
