ALAN Browne has described Sunderland as "one of the biggest clubs in England" after the Black Cats completed the capture of the Republic of Ireland international, who will provide much-needed experience at the Stadium of Light.

Adding some more Championship nous was identified as a leading priority on Wearside this summer and Browne arrives having made more than 400 appearances for Preston.

The 29-year-old, who has played 35 times for the Republic of Ireland, has signed a three-year contract at the Stadium of Light after leaving Preston when his contract expired at Deepdale earlier this summer.

“It’s a big change for me after being at Preston for such a long time, but it’s brilliant to be here," said Browne.

"Sunderland is one of the biggest clubs in England and I can’t wait to get started. I captained Preston for some time, so hopefully I can bring those leadership qualities to the Stadium of Light and add to what is a very talented squad.”

Browne won promotion to the Championship with North End back in 2015 and was made captain of the Lilywhites four years ago. He joins Sunderland on the back of one of his best campaigns having won Preston's Player of the Year award last season.

Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland's sporting director, said: “Alan is a dynamic and versatile midfielder, who will complement the players within our squad and bring fresh qualities to our midfield.

"His availability is something we have closely followed throughout the last eight months and his ambition was at the forefront of our discussions.

"He believes he can fulfil those ambitions at Sunderland and after seeing our potential, he wants to play an important role in creating future success. We are delighted to welcome him to the club."
