SAMMY Silvera is set to join Portsmouth on loan - with Middlesbrough hoping the Aussie winger will benefit from regular football in the Championship and then return and make an impact on Teesside.

The 23-year-old will link up with the Championship newcomers on a temporary switch but it's understood there won't be an option for Portsmouth to make the move permanent.

Boro still firmly believe the former Central Coast Mariners forward can be a success at the Riverside.

Silvera featured in 37 of Boro's 46 Championship games last season but only started 12. With Delano Burgzorg having bolstered the forward line and Riley McGree and Marcus Forss to return from injury that ruled them out of the final stages of last season, Silvera might have found game-time harder to come by next term.

With that in mind, Boro want the winger to benefit from a season of regular football with Portsmouth, who are preparing for their first season back in the second tier after 12 years out of the Championship.

Silvera scored some crucial goals last winner, including the late winner at Swansea and the second in the impressive 2-1 win at Leicester. He also struck in the Carabao Cup wins at Huddersfield and Exeter.

Earlier this year, Carrick said of Silvera: “I’m excited by Sammy. It was a huge step for him to come over in the summer. The intensity in this league in comparison to what he’s been used to, it is a big change. But he’s dealt with it really well.

"He’s got huge talent and he’s a really dangerous player. He’s shown that in glimpses so far. He now wants more football, and he should do."
