SUNDERLAND are closing in on the appointment of Regis Le Bris as their new head coach.
The Lorient boss was a part of a fluid five-man shortlist drawn up by the Black Cats and the Championship club are hopeful of an appointment in the next couple of days.
The move for the 48-year-old has been a complex process, with Lorient's relegation from the French top flight impacting proceedings, as well as work permit issues, which have now been resolved.
Le Bris remains in his position as head coach of the French outfit at the time of writing, with speculation from France suggesting he'll be sacked, but it's understood there is also a release clause in his contract.
Sunderland are confident they'll get their man. But who is he and what might we expect to see at the Stadium of Light?
The Black Cats held talks with the French head coach three weeks ago, not fazed by Lorient's recent relegation from Ligue 1.
Le Bris was highly sought after in the summer of 2023, when he first came to Sunderland's attention. The Lorient boss was linked with a move to fellow French side OGC Nice at the end of last season, after guiding Les Merlus to a tenth placed finish with the fifth youngest squad in the division.
Leeds United are also believed to have held talks with the French coach before deciding to appoint Daniel Farke.
Prior to taking the Lorient job, Le Bris had no senior managerial experience but had coached for a number of years at various youth set-ups across France.
The former midfielder, who played for Rennes, Laval and Ronse, spent eight years working in Rennes academy set-up before joining Lorient in 2012.
Le Bris has managed Les Merlus U19s and B team prior to stepping up to the first team. Highly regarded by those at the Stade du Moustoir, he signed a five-year deal in the summer of 2022.
Out of 41 games in all competitions last season, his side won 17, lost 14 and drew ten. However, this season proved to be more difficult as they were relegated on goal difference.
Renowned for his counter-attacking approach, Lorient were comfortable with their opponent having more of the ball during his tenure with the Ligue 1 side.
