SUNDERLAND have completed the signing of 34-year-old goalkeeper Simon Moore on a free transfer.
The experienced shot stopper was part of the Coventry City side which reached the Championship Play-Off Final in 2022/23, but played second fiddle to former Sunderland youngster Ben Wilson last season.
Moore, who also won promotion from League One with Sheffield United, signs a two-year deal with the Black Cats holding the option of further year, and will bring some much needed nous to a young side.
The former Sky Blue shot stopper is not regarded as a potential replacement for Anthony Patterson, who's caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs.
If their current number one was to leave this summer, Sunderland’s recruitment team would look to bring in a new first-choice shot-stopper, with Nathan Bishop also part of the first-team goalkeeper department.
Moore's arrival will help develop the Black Cats young goalkeeping talent with Matty Young and Adam Richardson both highly rated, but not yet deemed ready for regular first-team football.
Upon signing for the club, Moore said: "It feels fantastic to be here - when I heard Sunderland were interested, I jumped at the opportunity.
"I’ve been part of some very successful dressing rooms over the years, and I’d like to think I can bring that to Sunderland. I’m looking forward to getting in, meeting the rest of the lads and helping move the club in the right direction.”
Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman added: “We are really pleased to welcome Simon to our club. This summer, we felt it was vital to identify and recruit a goalkeeper who is capable of pushing Anthony Patterson daily, and who has additional qualities to training and match environments.
"Simon has a different profile to many players within our group and he is as motivated to push Anthony as he is to help our younger goalkeepers and the wider player group. We are delighted he has joined the club.”
