MIDDLESBROUGH believe versatile Delano Burgzorg will offer variety in their forward line - with the new recruit to be closely assessed in pre-season before a definitive decision is made on how he's best used at the Riverside.

Burgzorg can lead the line as an out-and-out striker but is equally as comfortable in a deeper attacking role and is effective playing off the left.

While the 25-year-old didn't set the world alight at Huddersfield last season, he was playing for a poor Town side who went through four managers and suffered relegation to League One. Burgzorg still scored seven goals in 33 appearances and Boro liked what they saw from the former Dutch youth international, who they watched extensively.

Burgzorg learnt of Boro's transfer interest before the end of the Championship season and immediately made it absolutely clear he wanted the move.

The forward remained wholly committed to Huddersfield until the end of the season and was angered with the way he was portrayed by former Town boss Andre Breitenreiter at the end of the season.

Breitenreiter, who has since been departed, left Burgzorg, Sorba Thomas and Jaheim Headley out of his squad for the final day game at Ipswich after Town's relegation had already been confirmed saying "some players are thinking maybe in their head that they left the club”.

But in an Instagram post after his Huddersfield loan came to an end, Burgzorg wrote: “Thanks for the support this season. Doesn’t matter how you treat me in the last weeks, I'll always be thankful and always gave 100 per cent.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t make it at the end, but Huddersfield Town will be back stronger. All the best in the future Terriers.

“Ps: Don’t believe everything that you hear if you don’t see it with your own eyes. When the heat is on, you should stick together not walk away from it.”

In Burgzorg's very early days at Huddersfield, former boss Neil Warnock said: “He gives us a dimension that we haven't got really. He backs in, same in training. He’s just got to learn the English game: when it's time to just pass it easy and go."

Boro know Burgzorg isn't yet the finished article but believe he has the potential to play at a higher level than the Championship and will back themselves to get the best out of the forward, as they did with Morgan Rogers and Emmanuel Latte Lath last season.

Boro still plan to further bolster their forward line this summer with a striker. But Michael Carrick and the recruitment team will be patient in their pursuit of a frontman. Despite the blistering start to the summer transfer window on Teesside, the market has not yet taken off and Boro will closely assess their options and the striker picture in the coming weeks.

Reports suggesting Boro have made a move for Tottenham's Will Lankshear are wide of the mark.

There's clearly been an effort to raise interest in the 19-year-old former Sheffield United frontman, and although Boro watched the teenager last season, he's one of several young Premier League strikers who was monitored in case the loan market is needed this summer or in January.

Boro's head of football Kieran Scott has said this summer Boro will only sign players on loan if permanent deals can be agreed at the end of the temporary arrangement.

Boro's priority this summer was quality rather than quantity. Luke Ayling completed his permanent switch, Burgzorg arrived on day one of the transfer window and USA international midfielder Aidan Morris is set to join from Columbus Crew.

That will be three priority boxes ticked before the end of June.

As reported by the Northern Echo, Boro will continue to monitor Ryan Giles' situation. His future remains unclear as things stand on the back of his loan move at Hull in the second half of last season.
