NORTH-EAST Paralympic great Stephen Miller will retire from competitive sport at the end of the season.

Miller, a six-time Paralympian and three-time Paralympic champion, has inspired countless individuals with his dedication, resilience and achievements during his illustrious career.

Cramlington-born Miller first represented Great Britain in club throwing at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, becoming one of Britain’s youngest track and field gold medallists at the age of 16.

Since then, he has competed in every major para-athletics championship up until the 2021 European Para-Athletics Championships in Poland, earning 34 major international medals.

In addition to his sporting achievements, Miller is the founder of SMILE Through Sport, an organisation dedicated to ensuring that disabled people get the opportunity to take part in sports, promoting inclusivity and engagement. He is also a renowned keynote speaker and team-building coach, helping corporate teams and individuals achieve their highest potential.

Miller said: “After an incredible journey in para-athletics, I have decided to retire at the end of this season. It has been an honour to represent my country and compete at the highest level.

“I am grateful for all the support I have received throughout my career and look forward to continuing to inspire and motivate through the work of SMILE Through Sport and my business brand Positiv.

"I must give special mention to my family—my mam, Ros; dad, John; and brother, Jonathan—who have been with me every step of the way. And my wife, Rachel, she is my rock who has got me through so many tough times.”

Miller's final competition will be at the CP Sport National Championships in Coventry on the September 8, marking the end of a remarkable career. Fittingly, CP Sport helped to kick-start Stephen’s career in para-athletics 30 years ago. The date also coincides with the final day of the Paris Paralympic Games.
