Thornaby FC has axed its women's teams, leaving over 100 girls without a club and prompting anger from Northern Echo readers.

The unexpected move by the football club provoked outrage online, with critics slamming the decision as 'shameful' and 'disgusting.'

Sarah Danielles reacted with disbelief: "Just when you think that equality towards females in sport is on the rise, this happens.

"I'm sure some Professional WSL players will get on board this & help find these girls a new home/club.

"It's shameful in 2024, to see this happening."

Matt Walby echoed this sentiment, noting the stark contrast against the progress made in women's football: "I guarantee this would never happen to a men's football team.

"Despite the success of the Lionesses at the 2022 Euros and the huge progress made since this just goes to show how far behind the women’s game still is.

"Shocking decision by that club."

However, some speculated there may be a reason behind the decision.

Stuart Meyers said "Must be a reason for it … not just going to cull for no reason."

This point was taken up by Gareth Ronnie Coxon who added: "Even if there is a reason they haven't said why, to make a decision like this they should have provided substance."

The Northern Echo understands that chairman Gary Morris called for the resignations of board members who voted to axe the teams last night, following the controversial decision at the emergency meeting over the weekend.

Thornaby FC declined to comment when contacted by The Echo.
