The decision by Thornaby FC to cut support for their women's and girls' teams has sparked a storm of protest from the public, with angry grassroots football fans taking to social media to voice their anger at the decision.

The Teesdale Park club made the announcement on Sunday after an emergency meeting

Some have labelled the move as "shocking and appalling" while others see it as a step back for gender equality in sports.

Britcab, a sponsor of the team, responded by asking for their logo to be removed from Thornaby's stadium saying the decision was "not aligned with our family business values".

Victoria Amy, a local resident, voiced disappointment: "Shocking and appalling decision tbh.

"So many girls are wanting to get involved with football and a club does this?".

The controversial decision has triggered calls for a swift meeting to reverse the issue.

Becky Pennick, a supporter of the team commented: "I see a swift meeting to reverse this situation coming."

While local resident Rob Buchanan even suggested boycotting the men's games until the women's teams are reinstated.

Local football clubs and coaching services have responded to the news with offers to house the displaced players.

Among them, Danny Fowler from DFcoaching expressed a willingness to place the girls into locally supported clubs.
