MIDDLESBROUGH have completed the permanent signing of full-back Luke Ayling following his release from Leeds United.

Ayling spent the second half of last season on loan at the Riverside, making 19 Championship starts as Boro narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs.

His contract at Leeds officially expires next month, and the 32-year-old right-back knew he would not be remaining at Elland Road when he agreed to his temporary switch to Teesside.

Sheffield United were linked with a possible move for his services earlier this month, but Boro head coach Michael Carrick was always confident of being able to complete a permanent deal.

Discussions were resolved swiftly, and Ayling, who provided eight assists during his Boro outings in the second half of last season, has signed a two-year deal with the Teessiders.

“We’re delighted that Luke is staying with us,” said Carrick. “After coming in on loan in January, he settled in very quickly and made a big impact, bringing his character and personality to the group. He knows what it takes to be a success in this league.

“The club has got under his skin and the supporters have really taken to him as well, so it’s great to have him on board permanently.”

Ayling was a huge fans’ favourite during his time with Leeds, where he helped the club win promotion to the Premier League and made more than 250 senior appearances.
