NEWCASTLE United's internationals have left the squad in Australia, with Eddie Howe planning to give his youngsters an opportunity to shine when the Magpies take on an A-League All Stars side in Melbourne on Friday.

Howe named a strong starting XI for Wednesday's friendly victory over Tottenham but the head coach made a string of second half changes and the side that finished the game was youthful and inexperienced.

The youngsters kept their nerve from the spot as Newcastle edged out Spurs in a penalty shoot-out and will now get another chance to catch the eye in Friday's game.

That will likely mean a further opportunity for Garang Kuol, who came off the bench for the final 20 minutes against Tottenham to finally get his first taste of action for Newcastle. Kuol didn't see much of the ball but did slot his penalty away, to the delight of the fans who had roared the Australian international onto the pitch.

The likes of Joe White and Ben Parkinson will also feature on Friday, with Howe set to give his senior players the night off.

Newcastle's internationals left the camp after the Spurs game to prepare to join up with various squads ahead of tournaments this summer, including the European Championships. But Howe is reluctant to ask too much from the senior players who are still part of the squad in Australia on the back of a gruelling campaign. Mark Gillespie is expected to start in goal on Friday, though, with the 32-year-old having come off the bench against Spurs and securing the victory by denying Bryan Gil from the spot.

"It'll be a younger team," said Howe ahead of the All Stars game, which kicks off at 8:05am UK time.

"A lot of the internationals will now leave us. We'll look after the senior players who have had long seasons and we'll give an opportunity to the young guys. Mark will play for sure. He did really well, it's great to see Nick (Pope) back as well. He's in the early stages of his comeback but he did really well too."

The young players who are given an opportunity on Friday will be keen to impress ahead of what will be a decisive summer for many.

The likes of Amadou Diallo and Lucas de Bolle are set to leave the Magpies when their contracts expire, so will be out to impress any watching clubs. Kuol, meanwhile, will be eager to build on his first outing in black and white this week.

The 19-year-old looks set for another loan move this summer after two difficult temporary stints away from St James' Park.

His first move to Hearts didn't go to plan and the flanker was a bit-part player in Holland with Volendam this season.

It's been a challenging couple of years for the teenager since he joined Newcastle but he says he understands the importance of patience.

“It was a good experience,” he told ESPN after his stint in Holland.

“I started the season, and you got hit by reality. Things change a lot, new coaches, new staff – a lot can change in football.

“It’s good to experience that and just put it in the backpack and move on. Football is not a race, it’s a journey. Things happen. You get ups and downs. You’ve got to you’ve got to push through it and keep working.”
