How did the Newcastle players fare in their penalty shoot-out victory over Blackburn?
BLACKBURN (3-4-2-1):
PEARS 8; Hyam 7, McFadzean 7 (Koumetio 79), Wharton 8; Brittain 6, Buckley 6 (Garrett 64, 6), Moran 7 (Ayari 64, 6), Chrisene 6; Szmodics 8, Dolan 6 (Markanday 64, 5); Gallagher 5 (Sigurdsson 46, 6).
Subs (not used): Wahlstedt (gk), Pickering, Finneran, Telalovic.
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
9 DUBRAVKA: Kept Newcastle in the game in normal time and extra-time, and was the spot-kick hero, saving two penalties
6 Trippier: Put in a solid defensive shift, but wasn’t able to get forward as he would have liked – delivered a couple of useful set-pieces
4 Lascelles: Had shaky moments all evening, and erred badly when he missed his header in the build-up to Blackburn’s equaliser
5 Schar: Didn’t use the ball particularly effectively, but held his nerve to roll home an excellent spot-kick
6 Burn: Was restored to the starting line-up on the left of the back four and won some important defensive headers
4 Longstaff: A disappointing display in which he repeatedly picked the wrong pass or gave the ball away
5 Guimaraes: Saw plenty of the ball, but wasn’t really able to pick a killer pass – scored from the spot in the shoot-out
5 Willock: Returned to the starting side for the first time since November, but didn’t get much change out of a resilient Blackburn side
4 Murphy: Wasted a couple of decent openings, most notably when he crossed to no one after breaking into the box at the end of the first half
4 Isak: Wasn’t a factor at all during his hour on the field – seemed disinterested by the time he was eventually hauled off
7 Gordon: Made a difference when he was switched to the central-attacking role and produced a clinical finish to open the scoring
Subs:
8 Almiron (for Murphy, 62): Changed the game when he came on for Newcastle in the second half – produced an excellent pass to set up Gordon
6 Miley (for Willock, 62): Added a bit of thrust through central midfield, but was then replaced before the end of extra-time
4 Barnes (for Isak, 62): Wasn’t able to offer much after coming off the bench – and was the only Newcastle player to miss his penalty
7 Livramento (for Trippier, 91): Helped get Newcastle going in extra-time – made two or three excellent breaks down the touchline
Anderson (for Miley, 111)
(not used): Karius (gk), Hall, Krafth, Ritchie.
Man Of The Match: MARTIN DUBRAVKA – Kept Newcastle in the game with some crucial saves, then it won it for them by saving two of Blackburn’s spot-kicks.
