How did the players fare in Newcastle United's 4-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates?
ARSENAL (4-3-3):
Raya 7; White 7, Saliba 7, Gabriel 8, Kiwior 7; Odegaard 7 (Smith Rowe 75), Rice 8, Jorginho 8 (Elneny 88); Saka 8 (Nelson 75), HAVERTZ 9 (Nketiah 75), Martinelli 8 (Trossard 63, 6).
Subs (not used): Ramsdale (gk), Soares, Elneny, Vieira, Jesus.
NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):
6 KARIUS: Things would have been even worse had he not made a couple of decent saves in each half
4 Trippier: Wasn’t able to get to grips with Martinelli and wasn’t able to get forward down the flank either
3 Schar: Couldn’t deal with the pace and movement of the Arsenal attack – was out of position on a number of occasions
3 Botman: One of his worst games in a Newcastle shirt – at least partially responsible for two of Arsenal’s goals
4 Livramento: Got the nod to start at left-back, but had a torrid night up against the in-form Saka
4 Guimaraes: Was a passenger in midfield for much of the game – wanted far too much time when in possession
3 Miley: Looked a yard off the pace for most of the evening – looks like a player who needs a break from the team
4 Longstaff: Was unable to match the pace or intensity of Arsenal’s midfield play
4 Almiron: Couldn’t get into the game at all before he was hauled off just after the hour mark
5 Isak: His return from injury was one of the few positives – went close with a second-half shot that whistled over
5 Gordon: Kept trying to stretch the Arsenal defence and helped set up Willock’s late consolation
Subs:
4 J Murphy (for Almiron, 63): Wasn’t really a factor in the closing stages of the game
4 Barnes (for Isak, 63): Dropped out of the side, and couldn’t influence things after coming on
Willock (for Guimaraes, 73)
Burn (for Livramento, 73)
Lascelles (for Botman, 73)
(not used): Gillespie (gk), Krafth, Hall, Ritchie.
Man Of The Match: KAI HAVERTZ – Slotted into the central attacking role for Arsenal and caused problems all evening.
