How did the players fare in Middlesbrough's 1-0 win over Chelsea?

MIDDLESBROUGH (5-3-1-1):

6 Glover: Made a good save from Palmer at the end of the first half, but was fortunate to escape when he spilled Fernandez’s shot

7 I Jones: Set up Hackney’s goal with a slide-rule cross, and did well defensively, doubling up on Sterling

8 Van Den Berg: Was ideally suited to his role as the right-hand side centre-half – marked Sterling out of the game

Fry: Controlled the Boro backline from the heart of the back five – was positionally superb when Chelsea attacked

8 Engel: Started at centre-half and switched to wing-back as part of the early reshuffle – was excellent in both positions

6 Bangura: Started brightly down the left-hand side, but lasted less than 20 minutes before suffering a leg injury

7 Howson: Produced a disciplined display to help shackle the Chelsea attack – made a number of crucial challenges

8 Barlaser: Held his defensive position in front of the backline, and produced the pass of the game to release Jones for Boro’s opener

7 Hackney: Used the ball impressively at the heart of midfield and delivered a perfectly-timed run to break the deadlock

6 Crooks: Spent most of his time chasing back towards his own goal, but never shirked his defensive responsibilities

5 Latte Lath: Was injured in the opening 30 seconds, when he should arguably have won a penalty after being caught by Disasi

Subs:

6 Coburn (for Latte Lath, 5): Did everything he could to unsettle the Chelsea defence after his early introduction

8 Clarke (for Bangura, 20): Came on in the early stages and was rock-solid throughout as Chelsea’s forwards were denied any space

(not used): J Jones (gk), Bilongo, Bridge, O’Brien, Gilbert, McCabe, Kavanagh.

CHELSEA (4-5-1):

Petrovic 5; Gusto 4, Disasi 5, Silva 5, Colwill 4; Madueke 4 (Mudryk 63, 4), Fernandez 5 (Broja 63, 4), Caicedo 5, GALLAGHER 6, Sterling 4; Palmer 3.

Subs (not used): Bettinelli (gk), Bergstrom (gk), Washington, Gilchrist, Williams, Golding.

Man Of The Match: DAEL FRY – The Middlesbrough centre-half led a superb rearguard action that kept Chelsea out.
